new body of work, Joey Wolf unifies color, contrast, texture and depth to transform oil paint into glowing neon signs that resonate with chill SoCal vibes. After meticulously shading and highlighting his background paintings, Wolf deftly pipes out tubular lines of bright light without actually using any neon pigment. The resulting trompe l’oeil imagery pulsates with the essential millennial aesthetic, as much as Drake’s James Turrell-influenced “Hotline Bling” music video does, and countless LED-drenched TikTok bedrooms. This distinctly California-influenced aesthetic has made its way around the world thanks to the Internet, with images of palm trees, avocados and weed populating retail spaces and Instagram feeds from Stockholm to Seoul. It feels natural that Wolf, a Southern California native, would embrace these icons. But while the popularized aesthetic is awash in pale pinks and golds, the reality of neon signs in the visual vernacular of Los Angeles, and in Wolf’s employ, is more nuanced: neon lights illuminate diners and bars, bowling alleys and strip clubs throughout the darker hours of the night. Just as these landmarks of the city cut straight to the point — GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS, Ice Cold Beer — so do Wolf’s paintings, which forego subtext in favor of electric directness sprawled across desaturated auras. As with his figurative paintings, Wolf can’t help but retain a spirit of incandescence, which in the neons is exemplified by his carefully crafted backgrounds. Wolf develops the foundation for the neon paintings in subtle hues to eectively balance the pinks and greens that create his fluorescent glow. As ever, Wolf’s sophisticated technical ability is unified seamlessly with his selected imagery, which feels personal, classical, and profoundly contemporary. Joey Wolf&nbsp;(b. 1987, Newport Beach, CA) juxtaposes historical European painting techniques and composition with twenty-first century tableaus in his meticulous renderings of candid social scenes and contemporary iconography. The imagery in Wolf’s paintings is labored and rich, with large layered and textured surfaces constructed with sculp- tural physicality. Acting as classically rendered glimpses of contemporary life, Wolf elevates these visual instances to a grand painterly scale. Miller and sculptures by Ryan Schneider running from July 11th through July 25. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, July 11th from 3:30-5:30pm. The drawings also function as a specific testament to memory. As Miller continuously engages this story over a period of many years, the forces&nbsp;of erosion which act upon his understanding of the past interact with the creative ones of memory formation. Each drawing therefore embodies this balancing act between two opposing, unstoppable, and temporally contingent processes. Ryan Schneider’s roughly carved wood and oil sculptures (he either shapes them with a chainsaw or burns them), in addition to an aesthetic resemblance to Miller’s drawings, act as a physical representation of this creation/destruction duality. The reductive nature of wood-carving stands in contrast to the additive one of coloring. Schneider cuts-out facets and carves-out textures from a block of wood and subsequently applies&nbsp;and recalls primitive, totemic objects. The artist describes the results as possessing an ‘alien’ element and a ‘War of the Worlds vibe.’ Miller often discusses the writings of Carl Jung, especially the ideaof archetypes—‘universal, archaic patterns and images that derive from the collective unconscious and are the psychic counterpart of instinct.’1 The happy convergence of the work of Miller and Schneider stands as a demonstration of this mystical and as of now, untestable construct. 1. To adhere to restrictions due to Covid-19, Slow Fade will be a drive-by exhibition at the Newsstand Project, located at the corner of Kings Rd adjacent to 8361 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90048 between 12-2pm on June 11, 2020. This selection of work, created while in self-isolation, is a continuation of the artist’s deep commitment to traditional painting and drawing techniques, coupled with her preoccupation with virtual female bodies. The resulting imagery is a kind of contemporary portraiture made possible by technology. By using 3-D software intended for video game developers to create customized, virtual portrait subjects, Emma’s work emphasizes and exacerbates the apparent inclination towards pornographic (or at least porn-adjacent) representations of women in 3-D communities and gaming culture. Of particular interest to Emma is the way in which the preferences, biases and predispositions of human developers appear by proxy in the software they create. As our virtual selves become ever-more inextricable from our physical selves, Emma questions how these preferences are imposed on virtual female bodies within the largely male-dominated arena of software and technology. Emma’s formal background in figuration is deployed when she transposes the virtual to the actual through paint and other traditional media. The resulting images play on mysteriously familiar tropes. They borrow heavily from the visual vocabulary of online fandom, fursonas and 3-D fetish community message boards, and veer quickly into the domain of fantasy, wherein erotic, angelic, cartoonish and mischievous young women occupy virtual spaces in which otherworldly and realistic elements coexist. The show will open on January 25th and run until February 8th, by appointment only. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, January 25th, from 11am-1pm. In his new body of work, Harnish cuts out and assembles photographs from contemporary and vintage fashion magazines and juxtaposes them alongside imagery from botanical books to generate relationships across seemingly distant pictorial genres. Hard, gestural cuts and tears often contrast with tonal gradations in the source material as well as Harnish’s deliberately haphazard compositional moves. Harnish also demonstrates a sensitivity to color and form through the use of muted pastel tones alongside passages of fluorescent, saturated color. As a Los Angeles native, Harnish’s work exhibits what he calls a “California romanticism”—a specific conflation of semi-wild and photogenic landscapes interrupted by a plethora of large, loud street advertisements. Various flora are jutted against defined lines; torn edges recall tattered street posters.
